Dental implants are a state-of-the-art option to replace missing or severely damaged teeth. Implants are small titanium posts that are inserted directly into a patient's jawbone, providing an exceptionally stable base for a beautiful, lifelike dental crown or dentures. Implants are extremely durable, and with proper care, they can last for a lifetime. At Four Seasons Dental, Dr. Timothy Sluser offer a variety of dental implants at our Pittsburgh practice that can replace a single tooth or an entire dental arch. Schedule your appointment today to find out more about the benefits of dental implants.
Preparing for Implants
To determine whether you are a good candidate for dental implants, you will undergo a comprehensive consultation with Dr. Sluser. He will examine your overall oral health and jaw bone structure, and take x-rays and photographs of your teeth and jaw. If you have depleted jaw bone structure, a result of waiting to address tooth loss, he may recommend a bone graft prior to your implant surgery. During this procedure, Dr. Sluser uses a patient's own bone or tissue from a donor source to strengthen the jawbone and ensure it has a strong enough structure to support the implants.
The Implant Procedure
Most patients choose to undergo intravenous (IV) sedation during implant surgery, and Dr. Sluser works with a certified anesthesiologist who can oversee your sedation in our office. Once you are sedated, he will place a biocompatible titanium post into your jawbone.
Over the next four to six months, your bone will fuse to the post during a process called osseointegration. This process enables the titanium post to serve as a permanent, stable base that mimics the function of a tooth root. Once healing is complete, you will return to our office, where Dr. Sluser will attach an abutment piece and restoration, like a crown, bridge, or denture, to the exposed top of the implant. Our restorations are made from durable dental porcelain and will be customized to blend into your smile.
Kinds of Implants
Dr. Sluser offers three types of implants, and during your consultation, he will help you determine which type is best to meet your needs. In addition to traditional implants, we offer mini implants and All-on-Four® implants. Mini implants have a smaller diameter than traditional implants, and are often a good choice for patients with depleted jaw bone structure. All-on-Four® Implants can support a denture using just four implant posts. In addition, All-on-Four® implants can usually be placed and restored in a single visit.
Regardless of the type of implant you choose, the procedure offers a number of benefits. In addition to restoring the function and aesthetics of your smile, implants guard against the bone loss that results from missing teeth, meaning your remaining teeth will not shift out of place and your jawbone will remain strong and healthy. Meanwhile, you can rest assured that your implant-supported dentures will not slip out of place while you are speaking or eating. Implants can improve your quality of life, allowing you to chew, speak, and smile with confidence.
