If any medical procedure has gotten a bum rap over the years, it’s root canal therapy. Although the procedure has become synonymous with pain, it has actually helped to relieve the pain of millions of people - and that’s just one of the many benefits it has to offer. At Four Seasons Dental, the general and family dentistry practice of Dr. Timothy Sluser, root canal therapy is performed using the most advanced technologies available to ensure a comfortable, pain-free experience for our valued patients.
Many patients are surprised to learn about the many root canal therapy benefits when they visit our Pittsburgh practice. They are equally surprised to discover just how pleasant and relaxing a trip to the dentist can be. At Four Seasons Dental, we strive to make the dental experience something that our patients will look forward to, rather than dreading. Who knows? As a patient of Four Seasons Dental, the next time you say, “I’d rather have a root canal,” you might even mean it!
What is root canal therapy?
Each of your teeth contains between one and four chambers called root canals. These canals contain a substance called dental pulp, which comprises nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissues that help to keep the tooth nourished and healthy. When this pulp becomes infected or inflamed, whether due to disease or trauma, the result is (often intolerable) pain. At this point, there are only two treatments possible: root canal therapy to salvage the tooth, or extraction. If left untreated, the tooth will eventually die, which will lead to a host of other oral health problems.
It is always best to salvage the tooth, of course. Through root canal therapy, the damaged pulp is removed, and the root canal is disinfected. The pulp is then replaced with a filler substance, and the tooth is sealed with a dental crown.
What are the benefits of root canal therapy?
There are many benefits associated with root canal therapy, including:
- It resolves tooth pain: Once the infected dental pulp has been removed, and the tooth has been sealed, tooth pain is generally resolved. While it may take a day or two for the pain to subside entirely, some relief should be immediate.
- It is a painless procedure: Contrary to its reputation, modern root canal therapy is a relatively pain-free procedure. To help ensure the comfort of our patients, we offer the option of dental sedation.
- It allows for the preservation of the natural tooth: Extraction of a damaged tooth should always be considered a last resort. When a tooth is missing from the mouth, the gum and jawbone tissues that once supported that tooth can begin to recede, leading to further oral health problems. By preserving as much of the natural tooth structure as possible, root canal therapy helps to keep a patient’s oral health intact.
- Custom dental crowns will help to rebuild a patient’s smile: Patients emerge from root canal therapy with smiles that are attractive and natural looking thanks to custom-crafted dental crowns that are placed atop the treated tooth. These crowns are meticulously designed to complement surrounding natural teeth in terms of their size, shape, color, and even texture.
