All-on-4 vs. Traditional Dental Implants

Pittsburgh All-on-4 vs. Dental Implants

Pittsburgh All-on-4 ImplantsDental implants have quickly become the most recommended treatment for adult tooth loss. Their popularity is due to the superior strength and durability that they provide to patients as well as their ability to stimulate the jaw bone so that the structure of the mouth remains uncompromised. As with all successful dental treatments, the technology used for dental implants has continued to advance. At Dr. Timothy Sluser’s cosmetic dentistry practice, his Pittsburgh patients now have the option of All-on-4 dental implants in addition to traditional dental implants. All-on-4 implants offer patients an entire arch of dental restorations, which are supported by just four dental implants. This gives patients a quicker and more affordable alternative to traditional dental implants.

How Do All-on-4 Implants Differ from Traditional Implants?

All-on-four dental implants offer the same strength and durability as traditional dental implants. The main difference is that they provide that stability while requiring the placement of fewer implants. All-on-4 dental implants treatment relies on a total of four dental implants: two dental implants that are similar to traditional implants and two dental implants that are longer and can be placed at an angle so that they secure into the stronger, denser jawbone in the back of the mouth (this is especially beneficial for patients who do not have the bone density to support traditional dental implants). This gives patients a strong foundation for dental restorations that requires fewer dental implants and, therefore, a quicker treatment procedure, faster recovery, and lower cost. Another major difference between traditional dental implants and All-on-4 is that traditional implants require multiple procedures whereas All-on-4 can often be completed in a single visit, including the placement of dental restorations. Because of the benefits of All-on-4 implants, it is an excellent treatment option for those patients who are ideal candidates.

Candidates for All-on-4 Implants

For many patients, traditional dental implants remain the best treatment option. Traditional implants are an excellent option for patients with a single missing tooth or multiple teeth that have been lost from different areas of the mouth. However, for patients who have lost most or all of their teeth, All-on-4 implants may be a better option. With this technique, patients can replace an entire arch of teeth with just four implants whereas traditional dental implants may require up to twice as many implants to support the same number of restorations. Because of this, ideal candidates for All-on-4 implants include the following patients:

  • Patients who have lost most or all of the teeth on a single arch or those whose teeth are severely deteriorated and require extraction
  • Patients who do not have the bone density that is required to support traditional dental implants
  • Patients who are looking for a quicker treatment alternative to traditional implants
  • Patients who are looking for a more affordable alternative to traditional implants
  • Patients who wear dentures and are dissatisfied with the fit

Based on each patients needs and the condition of the teeth, Dr. Sluser will determine whether patients are better suited for traditional dental implants or All-on-4 implants.
